Proof of income (recent pay stubs or bank statements), proof of residence (a utility bill), a valid driver's licence, references, and a down payment. Income is the deciding factor: most lots want a monthly payment under about 20% of take-home pay.
Expect a higher rate than a bank, commonly 15% to 25% APR, shorter terms of two to four years, and a down payment that covers the dealer's risk. The trade-off is approval when banks say no.
