How Do Buy Here Pay Here Dealers Calculate Payments?
In-house dealers finance the amount left after your down payment at a fixed annual rate, then divide the loan into equal payments that match your pay cycle. The monthly figure comes from the standard amortisation formula; weekly payments are the monthly amount times 12 divided by 52, and bi-weekly is times 12 divided by 26. Paying weekly does not make the car cheaper, but it does keep each payment small and matches most buyers' pay days.
Three numbers move the payment most. The down payment reduces the amount financed dollar for dollar. The term stretches the same balance over more payments, lowering each one but raising total interest. The APR sets how much of each payment is interest; at 21% over 30 months, roughly a quarter of what you pay is interest. Across the 4,658 dealer websites BHPH Finder analysed, the median advertised down payment is $500, and 1.2% of dealers say they report payments to the credit bureaus, so the loan rarely builds credit on its own.
Use the result as a check, not a promise. Ask the dealer for the out-the-door price including tax and title, the exact APR, and the payment schedule in writing, then compare them with the figure above. Where the numbers differ, the difference is usually fees rolled into the loan.
